How to play Spectrum Party

Spectrum Party is a team game about guessing on a spectrum. Every card is a pair of opposites, and a secret target sits somewhere between them. A round looks like this:

  1. 1. Start a room

Pick a nickname and create a game. You get a 4-letter code to send to everyone else.

  2. 2. Split into two teams

Players join from their own phone or laptop and pick Team Coral or Team Teal. Four players is enough; twenty is a party.

  3. 3. The psychic gives one clue

One player sees a card like Cold ↔ Hot and a hidden target on the dial. They say a single clue that points at that spot, like “Sauna”.

  4. 4. The team turns the dial

Everyone on the psychic’s team drags the same dial, argues, and locks in a guess. The other team then calls whether the target is left or right of it.

  5. 5. Reveal and score

Land in the bullseye for 4 points, nearby for 3 or 2. A correct left/right call is worth 1. First team to 10 wins.

Teams take turns, and a new player becomes the psychic each time. If a team hits the bullseye while behind, they get a catch-up turn. The full rules cover scoring, clue rules and ties.

Where it works best

Game night with friends

Put the room on the TV or let everyone use their phone around the table. Rounds take a couple of minutes, so it fits between other games or carries a whole evening.

Video calls and remote teams

Every player has the dial on their own screen, so it works on Zoom, Teams, Google Meet or Discord without screen sharing. It makes a good icebreaker for remote teams because the clues reveal how people think.

Family gatherings and holidays

The Kids pack keeps things simple for younger players, and the Holiday Party pack turns Christmas dinner arguments into points.

Classrooms and clubs

No accounts and no installs means you can start a round in under a minute. Spectrums like Useless ↔ Useful get a whole room talking.

Questions

Is Spectrum Party free?
Yes. It runs in any modern browser with no download, no account and no payment.
How many players do you need?
At least four, two per team. It works best with 6–12 players, and a room holds up to 20.
Is this the Wavelength board game?
No. Spectrum Party is an independent, Wavelength-style game with its own cards. It is not affiliated with CMYK Games, who publish the Wavelength board game.
Can we play from different places?
Yes. Everyone joins with the same 4-letter code from their own device, and the dial, clue and score update live for all players.
What makes a good clue?
One idea that points at the target without naming the words on the card or using numbers. “Sauna” for a target near Hot works; “Ninety percent hot” does not.
Which card packs are there?
Over 400 original spectrums in packs like Classic, Deep Thoughts, Food & Drink, Pop Culture, Kids, Hot Takes and Holiday Party. The host picks which packs to play.
